Get to know the inland vessel

The GMS Niedersachsen 22 is a typical dry cargo vessel with a length of 100 m and a beam of 10.5 m. It is operated by HGK Shipping GmbH and is mainly underway in the West German canal network between the Rhine and the Elbe.

Der Bug des Schiffes. Hier müssen eine Stereokamera sowie ein Laserscanner für die Umgebungserkennung untergebracht werden. Keine leichte Aufgabe, da der Arbeitraum begrenzt ist und für die Festmacher benötigt wird.
The bow of the ship. A stereo camera and a laser scanner for environment detection have to be installed here. Not an easy task, since the working space is limited and needed for the mooring lines.

Im Bugmaschinenraum befindet sich der Bugstrahler, der dem Schiff seine Wendigkeit verleiht. Im Hintergrund ist ein Schaltschrank zu erkennnen, den wir für unsere Zwecke in Beschlag nehmen.
In the bow engine room is the bow thruster, which gives the ship its maneuverability. In the background, you can see a control cabinet, which we will use for our purposes.

Das Steuerhaus mit dem Maschinenraum und der Wohnung befindet sich am Heck des Schiffes.
The control house with the engine room and the accommodation is located at the stern of the ship.
Blick unter das Steuerhaus: Die Hydraulik ist für die Höhenverstellung des Steuerhauses notwendig, damit auch niedrige Brücken unfallfrei passiert werden können. Das macht das Verlegen unserer Kabel nicht unbedingt einfacher.
View under the control house: The hydraulics are necessary for the height adjustment of the control house so that even low bridges can be passed without accidents. That doesn't necessarily make laying out our cables any easier.

Im Stuerhaus befindet sich der Steuerstand, als der Arbeitsplatz des Schiffsführers. Hier nimmt bald die KI ihre Arbeit auf.
The control stand, which is the skipper's workplace, is located in the control house. This is where the AI will start its work soon.
